'The Chicago Code': Where does Jennifer Beals end and Theresa Colvin begin?

The premiere of The Chicago Code on February 7th marks the return to network television for Ms. Jennifer Beals, an acclaimed actress whose personal strength and gumption may finally have a chance to show itself on-screen. In The Chicago Code, Beals portrays Theresa Colvin, the first female Superintendent of the Chicago police force. It is not a title she takes lightly, nor is the responsibility that comes with simply acting the part taken for granted by Beals.

Shot in the city of Chicago itself, the series uses the setting as another character. It is both equal parts frustrating, beautiful, corrupt-- and frustratingly beautiful and corrupt!

“I think what's interesting about this city…is that you have the corruption-- in terms of the history of the city, from day one you've had the corruption, but you've also had in equal measure people who are willing to reform the city,” Beals explained. “Sometimes those two get mixed up together, and the reformers become the corrupters, and the corrupters all of a sudden find some reason to reform. I think that's one of the things that's so dynamic about the city and dynamic with about the show.”

Beals grew up in Chicago, too, so spending time there now is really a homecoming for her. And she is making her own mark on the city just like Theresa Colvin. Just prior to chatting with LA TV Insider Examiner, Beals shared she was behind a woman on the road whose car had gotten stuck in the snow. The woman left her car to look for help and Beals offered her own assistance but the woman told her that she was waiting for a man to come and push her out.

“Honey, if you’re waiting for a man to come help, you may be waiting a long time!” Beals half-joked, adding she said that the two of them could push up their sleeves and get the job done.

It is that exact mentality that makes Beals such a perfect fit for the role of Theresa, a go-getter herself (and at times, self-proclaimed ball-buster), who refuses to buckle under the pressure of being in a man’s world. She carries herself extremely professionally and maybe even at times a bit too hardened in order to build up a thick skin and not just survive but thrive in the line of duty.

“I was really walking into uncharted territory,” Beals shared. “She’s the first female superintendent and I just thought it would be very interesting to take that walk into what kind of leader does she become in that position. How do you balance your personal life with the demands of that kind of job?”

Well, for Theresa Colvin balance is something of a misnomer. Beals shared Theresa’s way of dealing with the job is to just forego the personal life, but for a friendship with Detective Jarek Wysocki (Jason Clarke).

“You get little glimpses of it every now and again, but really this is a person who has dedicated everything to their job-- for better or for worse-- and toward the end of the season you start to see the toll that that takes on her personally,” Beals previewed.

“It’s grueling! At times I just wished we’d have a scene where I’d get drunk at a bar. That would be great. Or karaoke or something, I don’t know. It’s grueling, and it made me realize for her it had to be grueling.”

So her relationship with Jarek is something of a Godsend; it is the one place where Theresa can feel like she can let down her guard-- if not her hair-- even the slightest little bit. Having someone to carry some of the emotional weight is always welcome, but for Beals it’s more than that: it’s also the chance to layer some subtle subtext to her character:

“I thought the relationship to Jarek was also interesting; it’s a very interesting line we walk between intimacy and respect, being able to tell the truth to one another and maybe goading one another and being able to make each other laugh.”

But more than that it is through Jarek that we may get to see the real Theresa, underneath the face she puts on as a part of her (very crisp) uniform. In that way, The Chicago Code has a very strong modern-day “buddy cop drama” element, corrupting the confines of that original formula in a way that is more than welcome.

“You know, you can't possibly be self-confident all of the time,” Beals continued. “There's got to be moments where you don't really know what you are doing, but you are sometimes getting by with bravado. [Theresa]’s certainly been in the police force long enough and been in different departments to have quite a bit of respect, and certainly self-respect, of the knowledge that she does have, but there's no template. There's nobody who has gone before her: she's it. And so it means that has to be so on her game and so aware that if she makes a mistake, she ruins it for the women who come after her. And so there's this constant self-monitoring that's going on that's very difficult, and yet she has to pretend that she knows everything and is on it, and with Jarek, even though, in the world of the pilot, he's really like her best friend, which is such a sad comment on her life, but that's really how it is.”

Beals also said that she, along with the rest of the stellar cast, got to go on ride-alongs with some real Chicago police officers in order to get into the right frame of mind for some of the heavier action sequences. But since Theresa is the Lieutenant and as much of a suit as one can be in civil servitude, she doesn’t really get to partake in any stuntwork. At least so far.

“Mostly just like smashing people in the face with my elbow,” Beals laughed. “No kicking in doors!”

Well, maybe in season two!

“[The ride-alongs] blew my mind!” She revealed. “I wouldn't last on the street for thirty seconds. I would hide in the car!…I have to say, now, when I'm in Chicago and I see a cop car go by, I’m just like: ‘There are my boys. Those are my girls.’ Like, I feel really-- I feel really proud of them because they work so hard to keep us safe. And I know that sounds so corny, but they do under such incredible circumstances.”
